Poland inks €1.5bn arms deal with new NATO member Sweden

In a military package worth €1.5 billion, Poland inter alia purchased Carl-Gustaf M4 grenade launchers from Sweden on March 4.

On the eve of Sweden’s official NATO entry as the alliance’s 32nd member, Poland’s Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz met Swedish Minister of Defense Pål Jonson at the 3rd Ship Flotilla in Gdynia on March 4.

Within the agreement package worth approximately €1.5 billion, Poland will purchase several thousand Carl-Gustaf M4 grenade launchers for the Polish army, anti-tank, multifunctional, demolition, fragmentation, smoke, illumination, training and exercise and technical documents.

Saab said delivery will be made between 2024-2027. The company has also reached an agreement with other NATO member countries and strategic partners in Asia for the same grenade launcher.

The Carl-Gustaf M4 grenade launcher is the latest product from the Carl-Gustaf family, produced to combat all types of armored vehicles, including tanks. It has been specially produced to destroy targets and purify and illuminate an area from smoke. It has a range of 300 to 2,100 meters, depending on ammunition used. Compared to the M3 series, the new series is more ergonomic for situations requiring use in urban areas.

“We have signed a very important contract. The Polish Armed Forces will be richer in excellent, good equipment, with anti-tank grenade launchers of Swedish production. This is one of the most important contracts for equipment that has already proven its worth in combat in Ukraine. These are very good reviews about this weapon, it passes the test very well. From today, our army will be enriched with anti-tank grenade launchers, but also with ammunition. These are not only several thousand grenade launchers, but also several hundred thousand rounds of ammunition.” said Kosiniak-Kamysz.

At the meeting, defense cooperation, Russia’s Ukrainian war, aid to Ukraine and Sweden’s NATO membership were on the agenda.

“Sweden is our important partner. All the more so because today I welcomed the minister not only to Poland, but also to NATO. We are very happy that Sweden is becoming a member of NATO, our security alliance, which gives us extraordinary guarantees. I heard today that Sweden knows that it is joining a pact that is organized for cooperation, but most importantly, it is joining a pact that will defend every piece of land of NATO member states. The minister, on behalf of the Kingdom of Sweden, expressed his full commitment to Article Five.” said Kosiniak-Kamysz.

“I am very happy that Sweden is joining NATO, which emphasizes our solidarity and cooperation. Poland and Sweden will no longer be just partners, but also allies within NATO. We are impressed by Poland’s investment in defense infrastructure. Sweden will support Poland not only in the Baltic Sea region, but within the entire alliance,”  said Jonson.
