The newest and most modern Army Prepositioned Stocks (APS) depot of the U.S. Army was opened in Powidz on 18 September 2024. Earlier it was inspected by delegation from the U.S. Congress. U.S. Army operates APS depots all-over the world to facilitate military logistics, so in the event of conflict only troops are sent out while vehicles and armament are ready nearby. There are five categories of depots: APS-1 USA, APS-1 Europe, APS-3 Alfoat, APS-4 Northeast Asia, APS-5 Southeast Asia.
Six APS-2 are located in Europe in five countries under the command and control of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade. Each APS-2 has the capability to house and maintain machinery and equipment for one Armored Brigade combat team or Sustainment Brigade with engineering, artillery, military police, and medical capabilities. By providing turn-key power projection packages ready to operate at a moment’s notice, the APS-2 program is a key component of U.S. Army power projection and warfare readiness in Europe, but also in Africa. In this system transfer of one Armored Brigade from USA to Europe is shortened from two months to only one week.
The Powidz APS-2 is comprised of 650,000 square feet of humidity-controlled warehouse space and a vehicle maintenance facility. Since June 2024 it has been delivered modernized Armored Brigade combat equipment transferred from Mannheim (Germany) APS, including 80 Abrams M1A2SEPv3 main battle tanks, 130 Bradley M2 infantry fighting vehicles, 18 Paladin M109A7 howitzers, munition vehicles, transporters, trucks, combat bridges and more.
The 405th AFSB’s APS-2 program enhances capability of U.S. Army in Europe and Africa to support potential warfare while simultaneously promoting stability and security in the region. Additionally, it helps to assure NATO partners and allies that the United States are fully committed to collective defense of Europe. The Powidz APS-2 is the main single infrastructural undertaking of NATO in the last 30 years. It will attain full operational readines in 2025.
