In September 2024 the Polish state-owned railways PKP Intercity deployed the first Griffin 200 electric locomotives produced by Newag, which are the first Polish locomotives certified to operate at 200 km/h. In near future they are also expected to obtain certifications in Germany, Czechia, Austria and Hungary, followed by other countries in 2026. PKP Intercity ordered 95 Griffins at total zł 3.5 billion ($ 875 million) under a record-breaking contract in Polish railway industry using now around 500 locomotives. In Summer season 2024 PKP Intercity transported over 7 million passengers per month. Newag is a stock exchange company based in Nowy Sącz, dating back to 1876 and employing 1500 people. It produces diesel and electric locomotives and train cars. In 2023 the fastest Polish prototype locomotive Griffin E4MSUa produced by Newag reached a record of 240 km/h.
