The Museum of Polish History, located within the Citadel of Warsaw, has added another accolade to its growing list of international recognitions by winning the ULI Global Award for Excellence 2024, presented by the Urban Land Institute. This prestigious honor, shared with the Museum of the Polish Army, celebrates the architectural and cultural significance of this newly established complex.
A symbolic space for dialogue and unity
Since its inauguration, the Museum of Polish History has become a vital space for community dialogue and cultural celebration. Its symbolic location within the Citadel of Warsaw provides a profound backdrop for events such as the recent National Independence Day celebrations, which highlighted the unifying power of this historic and culturally rich venue.
Recognizing excellence in architecture and community impact
The ULI Global Award for Excellence, established in 1979, is one of the real estate industry’s most prestigious awards. It evaluates projects not only for their architectural and urban design quality but also for their functionality, sustainability, benefits to local and broader communities, and economic performance. The Museum of Polish History excelled across all criteria, with the jury praising its user-centric design, ecological strategies, and significant cultural mission.
Doug Voigt, Chair of the Jury and Partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), emphasized the transformative potential of the winning projects:
“Each winner demonstrates deep commitment to addressing pressing local issues and positively influencing their communities and surroundings. Together, they represent diverse strategies for transforming urban spaces globally, serving as role models regionally and internationally.”
A masterpiece of symbolism and design
Designed by the renowned WXCA architectural studio, the museum’s structure—referred to as the “stone monolith of history”—has also been recognized by other international bodies. Earlier this year, the Prix Versailles named it one of the “World’s Most Beautiful Museums 2024,” commending its layered symbolism and meticulous craftsmanship. The museum’s marble facade features reliefs inspired by architectural traditions, allowing visitors to engage with its mission through its very walls.
Sophie Henley-Price of STUDIOS Architecture, a ULI juror, highlighted the museum’s comprehensive excellence:
“The Museum of Polish History stands out for its striking yet inclusive architecture, sustainable strategies, regenerative impact, and placemaking efforts. Above all, its cultural significance and mission transcend Warsaw, acting as a powerful vector for change.”
A global beacon of culture and innovation
Accepting the award on behalf of the museum at the ULI Awards Gala in Barcelona, Krzysztof Budzisz, Architect and Partner at WXCA, and Anna Piekarska, Deputy Director of the Museum of Polish History, expressed gratitude for the recognition.
The museum is not just a monumental architectural feat; it is a testament to Poland’s commitment to preserving and promoting its history on a global stage. Its inclusion in the ULI’s list of winners positions it as a benchmark for cultural and urban projects worldwide.
This achievement reinforces the Museum of Polish History’s role as a space that bridges Poland’s rich history with its future aspirations, fostering community, education, and cultural exchange on a global scale.
