The Tale of Genji

Over a thousand years ago, an aristocrat, a writer and a poet – Murasaki Shikibu, wrote Genji monogatari – a masterpiece of Japanese literature considered part of the world’s cultural heritage. The innovative psychological novel, anticipating modern literature in a surprisingly contemporary way, presents the world of the Heian era through the emotions of its characters. The love stories of Prince Genji and his descendants, written in accurate and evocative language, rich in various narrative strategies, have been a constant inspiration for artists for over a thousand years. The new temporary exhibition at the Museum of Japanese Art and Technology Manggha in Kraków presents works of art inspired by the Tale of Genji and features woodcuts and illustrations from the collection of Feliks “Manggha” Jasieński – one of the biggest Polish collectors and art patrons. Exhibition is open until November 3.
