The universal experience of sleep has always been a subject of reflection, fascinated, disturbed and inspired. Perceived as a journey to a mysterious realm, with a foretaste of the afterlife, sleep liberates from the constrictions of matter, time and space, and allows one to come face to face with the sacred or encounter those, who had passed away. Dreams seen as a mysterious announcement of what fate might bring carry hidden meanings, warnings and clues and with the development of psychoanalysis they become the key to understanding the deepest secrets of the human mind. The temporary exhibition at the Ethnographic Museum in Krakow – “Sleep Tight, Dream Well”, is an attempt to take an ethnographer’s look at the phenomenon of sleep and dreaming – how we cope with sleep and insomnia, starting from preparation of the environment for a safe rest, to precautions against the unknown. The exhibition is open until March 30.
