“The paradox is that 500 million Europeans are asking 300 million Americans to protect them from 140 million Russians. We must rely on ourselves, fully aware of our potential and believing that we are a global power,” said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk at the Western leaders’ meeting in London on March 2.

Europe has the potential to become a global defense powerhouse, but it must believe in its own capabilities and act in unity. A historic meeting in London brought together Western leaders, emphasizing the urgency of the situation and the need for decisive action in supporting Ukraine, strengthening European security, and reinforcing ties with the United States. Following the meeting, Tusk highlighted the consensus among leaders, stating that unity is crucial for continued support for Kyiv and the security of the entire region.

European Leaders, NATO, and the Ukrainian President – A Unified Stand

Following the meeting, Tusk stressed that Poland’s stance on Ukraine has widespread support among leaders. There was no doubt among the participants about which side they should stand on – Ukraine’s.

“Poland’s position accurately reflected the sentiment in the room. Ukraine requires continuous support and the strongest possible position before negotiations with Russia. No one has any doubts about who the aggressor is, who the victim is, and where Europe stands in this conflict. Europe stands with Ukraine,” he said.

Tusk further emphasized that Poland’s national interest demands unequivocal and lasting support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression. “Poland’s national interest requires unequivocal, lasting support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression. This is not up for debate,” he stated.

The Polish Prime Minister highlighted Poland’s key role in ensuring regional security and the necessity of increased European engagement in defense. “Our country bears a special responsibility for the security of the EU and NATO’s eastern border. This is not just a military issue but also a political one – we are a frontline state that must be prepared for any scenario. Our security is also Europe’s stability.”

He also noted the growing commitment of other European nations to increasing defense spending. “Poland has been an undeniable model in this regard, but I am pleased that more and more countries are moving beyond words and declarations to implement the necessary increase in defense spending. It was particularly significant to hear that strengthening the eastern flank is an absolute priority for Europe, including the EU.”

Europe’s Defensive Potential – Strength in Numbers

Amidst growing geopolitical challenges, Tusk underscored the need for Europe to develop its own defense capabilities. While Europe is already a global economic and military force, it must recognize its own strength and act collectively to ensure security. “Europe cannot stand alone, but it must be self-reliant when it comes to defense. Only a well-prepared and strong Europe can guarantee peace on the continent,” he said.

The Prime Minister cited data from The International Institute for Strategic Studies, demonstrating that Europe, together with Ukraine, possesses twice as many fighter jets as Russia and a significant numerical advantage in professional soldiers. However, he warned that the real issue lies in Europe’s lack of confidence in its own strength. “The paradox is that 500 million Europeans are asking 300 million Americans to protect them from 140 million Russians. We must rely on ourselves, fully aware of our potential and believing that we are a global power.”

According to the data presented, Europe and Ukraine have 2.6 million professional soldiers, compared to 1.1 million in Russia. Similarly, when it comes to operational fighter jets, Europe and Ukraine have 2,991 aircraft, while Russia has 1,224. In artillery, Europe and Ukraine also hold a decisive advantage, with 14,400 units compared to Russia’s 5,157.

Transatlantic Cooperation and Future Actions

“There is no room for doubt. We support Ukraine and are strengthening our alliance with the United States – regardless of the challenges ahead,” said Tusk.

Poland is particularly invested in ensuring that Europe becomes as strong as possible while maintaining close relations with the United States. Strengthening European defense capabilities and deepening transatlantic cooperation are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary goals.

Tusk also expressed support for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s initiative to hold a Europe-U.S. summit, which could bolster transatlantic security cooperation. “I fully supported Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s proposal for Europe and the United States to establish a structured and ongoing dialogue. We must engage in a continuous and honest exchange of views to understand each other as clearly as possible before negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. It is imperative that Europe and the United States speak with one voice,” he said.

During the London meeting, Tusk met with leaders from France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Turkey, as well as with the President of the European Council, the President of the European Commission, NATO Secretary-General, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
