Evil Does Not Exist

The latest film by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (“Drive my Car”) is a story of Takumi and his daughter Hana, who live in a village surrounded by the stunning wild nature. Takumi provides wood and water to his neighbors and collects wild wasabi for a local restaurant. Their quiet and peaceful life changes when a company from Tokyo appears, planning to build a luxury campsite in the area. The newcomers don’t realize that they are in conflict not only with the local community, but also with much more powerful forces of nature. The mystery aura emphasized by the score by Eiko Ishibashi, reminds of the power that lies in the seemingly defenseless and innocent nature. The winner of five awards at the Venice Festival, including The Grand Jury Prize and The FIPRESCI Award, “Evil Does Not Exist” in theaters on November 15.
