The project to build a container terminal in Świnoujście in northwest Poland has reached an important milestone with a positive environmental decision. The document was issued by the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Szczecin, following a thorough analysis of the potential impact of this investment on the surrounding environment.
The assessment process also included a transboundary proceeding involving the relevant administrative bodies, including the ministries of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, various non-governmental organizations and private individuals.
The environmental approval is tantamount to giving the green light to start construction of the container terminal in Świnoujście.
Environmental protection is part of the mission for the construction of a deep-water container terminal in the city. The term green terminal is not coincidental. The Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority assures that the project will be pro-environmental at every stage: from conception, through project implementation and then operation of the terminal.
“Respect for the environment lies at the heart of our plans for the container terminal. This is why, among other things, we have decided that the project will be implemented on a jetty, a newly created land area on the Pomeranian Bay, with minimal interference in the current forest area. We want to keep any environmental nuisance to a minimum. It is to be ecological and modern – these are our priorities!” said Krzysztof Urbaś, President of the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority.
The creation of a deep-water container terminal in Świnoujście is one of the elements included in the ‘Program for the development of sea ports until 2023.’ Its aim is to consolidate the position of Polish ports in the Baltic Sea basin and make them key hubs of global supply chains for Central and Eastern Europe.
