Where Seniors Travel
According to forecasts by the Central Statistical Office, within the next five years, the number of people over the age of 65 will reach 23.3% of the population, and by 2050, these individuals will make up one-third of society. This means that seniors are becoming an increasingly important segment of the tourism market. Interestingly, their travel activity is at its highest level in history.
Retirement, free time, and grown, independent children allow seniors to fully enjoy life, fulfilling dreams of exploring the world and gaining new experiences.
Today’s senior is energetic, curious about the world, and ready for new challenges. A growing number of older travelers seek vacations that not only allow them to relax but also satisfy their desire for active pastimes. Thanks to tailored travel offers, seniors can choose from a wide array of options that combine relaxation with discovering new places, cultures, and attractions. The modern senior is an active traveler who not only wants to rest but also to experience, explore, and learn. According to the study “Tourism Activity of Older Adults”, the main goals of international trips among seniors are rest and recreation (60%), sightseeing of historic landmarks (55%), and learning about history, culture, and local customs (34%).
Where do seniors go?
More and more seniors are choosing international travel that combines relaxation with elements of active exploration. Popular destinations include Italy, Greece, and Spain. Sunny beaches, pleasant climates, and rich histories make these locations a paradise for tourists seeking both relaxation and new experiences. However, appetite grows with experience – and it must be said that active seniors, as they gain more travel experience, have increasingly high expectations.
“Europe, especially the Mediterranean region, remains a popular travel destination among seniors, but in recent years we’ve seen growing interest in more exotic locations. Egypt, Turkey, and especially Morocco are top choices whose popularity grows year by year. Today’s 60+ tourist is a very informed and savvy client. They come into the travel agency well-prepared: they’ve already visited many places, gained experience, and know what they expect from their vacation. That’s why their visit to the sales office is often quick and efficient – clients know what they want, and the travel agency visit is just to finalize the purchase,” comments Patrycja Karpik, Brand Manager at Rainbow.
Tailored travel offers
Today’s senior wants to make the most of their trip in the most active way possible and enjoy life to the fullest. As a result, themed tourism is gaining popularity, including activities such as cooking classes, touring specific types of attractions (e.g., Loire Valley castles), or express trips that allow travelers to visit many places in
a short time. There is also strong interest in trips focused on exploring cities with particular character, such as art cities, UNESCO heritage zones, or wine regions.
An important aspect is also the availability of Polish-speaking guides, which gives seniors a sense of comfort and safety, allowing them to better understand the places they visit and their history. Adapting offers to the language needs of tourists allows them to enjoy their trips more fully, without the stress of language barriers.
There is no doubt that seniors are becoming increasingly active tourists who not only enjoy the charms of travel but also fully engage in new experiences and passions. For them, travel becomes not only a way to relax, but also a path to a fuller, healthier, and more satisfying life. In this way, seniors are proving that age is just a number, and the limits of possibility are broader than ever before!
