Acclaimed “Jawnuta” back in Poznań

The opera “Jawnuta”, a rather rarely staged work of the father of the Polish national opera – Stanisław Moniuszko, tells a story of a difficult love of Stach and Chicha, defying eternal divisions, prejudice and obstinacy. He comes from a well-off family; she is a Gypsy. The Grand Theater in Poznań’s staging, with the musical arrangement by Rafał Kłoczko, was awarded in the Rediscovered Work category by the Jury of the prestigious International Opera Awards in 2023. The director Ilaria Lanzino, famous for her unconventional and innovative productions, sees “Jawnuta” as a story about the Polish Roma, their complex history and tragic fate during World War II. To co-create the performance, she invited the Roma artists from the famous musical dynasty of Czurey, whose work complemented Moniuszko’s music, allowing this unique staging to expand its meaning with an extraordinary lesson in tolerance and commemorating the Roma extermination. This fall “Jawnuta” is back to the Grand Theater in Poznań for the Stanisław Moniuszko’s Festival taking place from September 28 until October 13. Four performances of the opera have been scheduled from 3rd until 6th of October. For tickets visit: bilety.opera.poznan.pl
