Return to VHS

“Videoworld: A Return to VHS Cassettes” is a real treat for those who like to walk down the memory lane. New temporary exhibition at the Film Museum in Łódź takes visitors back in time to the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the VHS technology revolutionized film by bringing cinematic entertainment from movie theaters into our homes. In Poland video culture began with tapes and video cassette recorders imported from the West. State censorship in theaters was losing to the circulating copies watched thanks to the VCRs bought in Pewex or Baltona stores. The growth of the early capitalism in Poland fostered development of the video market. Businesses were thriving, VCRs became more available, copyrights were completely ignored, Poles were watching everything on tape. The presented exhibits come from this period – the peak of VHS popularity in Poland. The exhibition is available in English and will be open until September 1.
